The Master Gardener Basic Training Program includes a series of 12 courses offered through the Continuing Studies Program at the University of Northern British Columbia.
It is expected that in order to pursue the Master Gardener certification, students will complete all 12 workshops within a one-year period. Exceptions may be made only in exceptional situations.
To complete their training as a Master Gardener, trainees are required to complete a minimum of 30 volunteer hours and 5 self-education hours each year for a total of 70 hours over two years. Volunteer opportunities are coordinated by the Volunteer Coordinator for the Prince George Chapter.
After the training period, a Master Gardener must complete a minimum of 15 volunteer hours and 5 self-education hours each year to maintain their standing.
Master Gardeners assist in horticultural education within the community by doing gardening clinics, lectures and demonstrations, working on research projects or school and community gardening projects and in many other areas.
Master Gardeners and Master Gardeners in Training must maintain membership with the Master Gardeners Association of BC and the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society.
The next Basic Training Program will be held January-April of 2017. Register at www.unbc.ca
