Our project “Growing in Our Community – Elementary School Program” was awarded a 2nd place Award of Excellence at the Canadian Master Gardeners’ Conference in April, 2016. Applications were received from Master Gardener chapters across Canada. The purpose of the award is to recognize the work done and share information about successful projects with other chapters to consider using the ideas themselves.
Our custom-developed program for kindergarten to grade 3 students linked training content to the Ministry of Education curriculum. It was presented by a team of 7 Master Gardeners, in 27 workshops in 5 schools to 500 children in Greater Victoria in 2015. Projects were judged on ease of replication, effective use of resources, originality, creativity, consistency with the Master Gardener Mission, strength of partnerships, significant learning, size of impact and completeness of the application.
Accolades from the judges: ”Excellent children’s program and link to the Ministry of Education in BC. Great opportunity to introduce not only gardening but also where food comes from and nutrition to children. An impressive project”.
Many thanks to Paula and Rosemary who developed the courses and have led their team of volunteers in delivering such a worthwhile program! Paula received the award from VMGA President Justin, on behalf of the whole team in front of the Children's Garden at the HCP.
