Become a Master Gardener

Master Gardener Basic Training Program

Successfully completing the Master Gardener Basic Training Program is a pre-requisite to becoming a Master Gardener. This intensive 78-hour course is designed for the enthusiastic home gardener, providing up-to-date information on all the gardening basics. The course combines home study, classroom and online instruction, assignments and projects.  Learn from other Master Gardeners and local gardening experts about a series of topics relevant to northern BC.

To pursue the Master Gardener Certification students must complete all 12 workshops within the year the course is offered, pass the final exam and complete the self-directed volunteer component of 60 hours over a 18-24 month period. Volunteer work can be directed towards any of the community engagement projects already pursued by the Master Gardeners, like community gardening clinics, workshops, lectures or garden tours or could include new research and community projects identified by the student.

The next Basic Training Program is scheduled to run from September 2026 – January 2027, with intakes starting in June 2026.
