- I would like to plant some hostas? Is it too late now (July). Would it be better to wait until the fall or next spring? Also what kind of soil and amendments do hostas like?
Planting, transplanting and dividing should be done in early spring when the leaves begin to emerge or early fall (after summer heat) up to 30 days before the 1st frost. The ideal time is fall allowing the roots to develop with less focus development of the large leaves which have a high transpiration rate requiring more watering.
Add compost, humus or other organic matter to the soil regularly to provide nutrients and increase the moisture-holding capacity of the soil. An early spring application of a slow-release fertilizer with an eight- to nine-month release time is an easy way to provide nutrients to hosta beds annually.
