- What should I plant with my thyme in a container?
All varieties of thyme are suitable to plant in containers except those that are mat-forming which are used for groundcovers, often sold in garden centres as ‘creeping’ thyme. Thyme is a Mediterranean member of the mint family with various scented leaves and masses of little flowers attractive to bees, ladybugs, and other pollinators. When planting in the same container, it is best to plant thyme with other Mediterranean herbs that have the same growing requirements such as rosemary, sage, oregano, marjoram, and lavender. These are all plants that require a sunny location, light well-drained often poor soil, little maintenance, and are drought tolerant. Thyme is not a good companion for herbs like cilantro, basil, chives, or parsley which require more water, more frequently, and compete for the same nutrients in the soil. Thyme and its companion herbs are also deer resistant.
