The Prince George Master Gardeners Chapter began in 2008. The Chapter is affiliated with and supported by the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society (DDBGS) in Prince George.
Our objective is to educate the public on environmentally-responsible gardening practices. We encourage the use of biological controls, the provision of habitats for beneficial insects, and natural pest control strategies.
How do we support our community?
Our members are involved in the community in many ways. We work as a core group with other DDBGS volunteers who maintain the Educational Display Garden at the University of Northern BC. Working in teams, knowledge and experience is shared in an informal way between volunteers and when engaging with the visiting public.
We organize our community Seedy Saturday event, attend various trade shows and plant sales to give advice, promote gardening and provide gardening activities. We have partnered with the Prince George Public Library to host a Seed Library each spring, including workshops on how to save seeds. Our members also grow out many of the plants for the annual DDBGS plant sale. We act voluntarily as consultants to community and school gardens and present seminars or lectures as requested.
If you are a gardening enthusiast who likes to volunteer and share gardening knowledge, then you may be interested in taking the Master Gardener Basic Training Program. The program advances the gardener's knowledge of botany, soil health, diagnosis of plant problems, propagation and pruning techniques, vegetable gardening, the principles of composting and more. The next MG Basic Training will commence in 2024.
