The Summerland Ornamental Gardens (SOG) is a long-standing community treasure maintained and enhanced with the support of the Okanagan Master Gardeners (OMG) in cooperation with the Friends of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. Located in Summerland, British Columbia, these gardens provide a beautiful, educational space for locals and visitors alike.
Location and History
The gardens are located at 4200 Highway 97, Summerland, BC, on the grounds of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station. The gardens were initially established in the early 20th century as a demonstration site for ornamental plants suitable for the Okanagan climate. Today, they are a vibrant destination showcasing diverse garden styles and plantings.
Community Project Involvement
The Okanagan Master Gardeners actively participate in maintaining and enhancing several areas within the gardens, including:
Ironwood Bed
OMG led the renovation of a 400-square-foot understory bed that prominently features a Persian Ironwood tree (Parrotia persica). Overgrown annuals were replaced with perennials like Liriope muscari (Big Blue Lily Turf), Deutzia gracillis ‘Nikko’, and selected Hosta cultivars to create a low-maintenance, visually appealing bed that enhances soil health and conserves water.
The project aimed to test the viability of Liriope muscari in the Okanagan’s challenging climate while improving the aesthetic and ecological value of the garden. Now entering its fourth year, the bed is thriving, proving the plant selections successful in the local conditions.
Dry Shade Demonstration Bed
The latest addition involves creating a woodland-style bed showcasing plants that perform well in dry, shaded conditions, providing inspiration and practical knowledge for local gardeners facing similar challenges.
Volunteer Involvement
Master Gardeners Gwen D. and Melanie R. lead the efforts at Summerland Ornamental Gardens, working closely with a team of six volunteers. The group performs regular maintenance, renovation, and planting tasks. They also engage with visitors, answering gardening questions and sharing sustainable gardening practices.
Community Impact
The gardens serve as a living classroom for gardeners, promoting environmentally responsible practices such as water conservation and right-plant-right-place principles. Visitors gain inspiration from diverse garden types, including xeriscapes, perennial beds, and seasonal displays.
